  1. Tutorial: Getting Started

  3. Besides being a great screen saver, Bliss Saver is also a graphic toy that lets you interact with animated color paintings. This tutorial show you how to choose paintings; stop, play, and pause paintings; and how to interact with the color synthesizer.

  5. Once you have copied Bliss Saver and its associated files to your hard disk, drag the Bliss Saver floppy disk to the trash to eject it. Then open Bliss Saver on your hard disk by double clicking it.

  7. When Bliss Saver starts, it displays the Paint window and the Catalog window. You may be asked to install Bliss Saver as a startup application. You can do that now, or you can do it later with the Install command.

  9. To quickly learn the basic functions of the menus, you can turn on Balloon Help if you are in System 7 or later.

  11. Saving Your Screen
  12. If you leave your computer unattended while Bliss Saver is running, Bliss Saver detects the lack of activity and starts to save your screen from burn-in. The screen will turn black and Bliss Saver will start to display a Bliss Painting.

  14. Activating Screen Saver Mode
  15. To activate the screen saver immediately, click the Now button in the Bliss Now window. You can also move the pointer to the upper left corner of the screen. You can change which corner of the screen is used to activate the screen saver mode by choosing Preferences from the Edit menu.

  17. Playing a Painting
  18. Choose a painting in the Catalog window and click the Play button. The painting will start in the Paint window. Click the Pause button to pause the painting. Click the Play button to start it playing again. To restart the painting at the beginning, click Stop before you click Play. To have the painting fill the entire screen, click the Now button in the Bliss Now window.

  20. Make Your Own Color Effects
  21. If you are using a color monitor, choose a painting and click Play. Then hold the Shift key down and press the following sequence: RYRYRYRY. This will make the color synthesizer insert moving red and yellow stripes into the painting. You can also use the Caps Lock key to get the uppercase letters without holding the Shift key.

Now try doing smooth blends of color. Release the Shift key and the Caps Lock key. Then repeatedly press the following sequence: rrrrrr bbbbbb gggggg cccccc. This will make the color synthesizer move gradually to the colors red, blue, green, and cyan. By alternating a pair of keys, soft banding effects can be made. The interval between the color keys affects the spacing of the bands and stripes.

Press the 1 (one) key while a painting is playing. This will make the color oscillators go slowly, which has the effect of making long smooth blends of color. Then try hitting the 9 key. This makes the oscillators move much faster. The colors will still blend, but in a shorter time and space.

  27. Waveforms
  28. Hold down the Shift key and press 2. This selects the Triangle waveform for the color oscillators. The triangle waveform will create smooth blends of color, with the length of the blend determined by the oscillator speeds. Use the number keys and the equal key (=) and the hyphen key (-) to change the speed.

  30. To create bands of blended colors with hard edges in between, press Shift-3. This selects the Ramp Down waveform. When the Ramp Down waveform reaches zero (no color from that oscillator) it suddenly starts at the maximum value again.

  32. Bliss Saver has a host of different color keys. To learn about them, see the Keyboard Shortcuts section of this manual, or choose the Keyboard Map window from the Bliss menu. All of the alphabetic keys are used for colors, so there‚Äôs quite a variety available.

  34. Rhythms and Color Patterns
  35. By learning the color keys, you can play the color synthesizer like a musical instrument, with all kinds of expressive nuances. You can create drama, suspense, contrast, and all kinds of moods by choosing colors that you associate with certain feelings and experiences. You can also create abstract combinations of colors that you have never seen before. There‚Äôs an incredible variety of combinations of colors possible in Bliss Saver. The combination of your manual interaction and Bliss Saver‚Äôs automatic color synthesis makes exploration of color a fascinating experience.

As in music, you can make simple improvisations and compositions, or you can develop elaborate sequences with various forms, relationships, contrasts, etc. Bliss Saver is a new art form, one of realtime, interactive, visual composition and improvisation. The more you learn about the instrument and what it can produce, the richer your performances will be. Your creative input is everything.

  39. Composing Color
  40. Try writing down some of the color patterns you make on the keyboard. You can compose colors for a specific painting, or have an interchangeable color sequence for any painting. The rhythms are an important factor. The study of music can help you understand composition of textures and proportions in time. Your perseverance and creativity will make things come to fruition.
